Businesses are realizing that commissioning the design of an original family of typefaces is the ultimate form of branding; a unique voice at the core of visual identity and communication.

In addition to being unmistakably linked to a business or product, a custom typeface design can fulfill the special demands, application needs and reproduction requirements that can challenge marketing strategies. It can also be competitive in price to a four- or five-figure licensing fee for an existing typeface family that is already being used by many other businesses.

Often, global communication is as much a priority as uniqueness. Many companies seek exclusive fonts that fulfill their specific requirements in more than just the Latin alphabetic script. Whether you’re looking for a new design or the expansion of a proprietary design to other scripts, this is where my 35 years of experience and accumulated skill can help you.

After concluding a 30-year teaching career as a professor at Maine College of Art, I continue to be engaged to lecture about type and conduct workshops in letterform design at various institutions around the country and abroad. For me, it’s rarely about training future type designers, but about giving future graphic designers the sensitivity, knowledge and visual acumen for creating effective typographic solutions. The best way to do this is with a hands-on experience in the visual considerations to be made when working with our Latin alphabet.

Workshops are adaptable and have run from one to five days. I prefer to inquire about the immediate needs of the students from their regular faculty, so that the workshop addresses these needs as much as possible.

A selection of institutions where I’ve given lectures and conducted workshops:

  • Hamburg College of Art, Germany
  • Muthesius Academy of Fine Art and Design, Kiel, Germany
  • University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, MA
  • University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN
  • Cooper Union, New York, NY
  • Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI
  • University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA
  • Fordham University, New York, NY
