Tacitus Pro Light
About This Design
Tacitus is based on the Capitalis Rustica, a Roman inscriptional and brush-written letterform from the first to fifth centuries A.D. The inspiration for Tacitus’ particularly narrow proportions came from an inscription found and documented in Austria by Emile Hübner in 1885. Nevertheless, the majority of characters in this typeface had to be invented to meet the demands of modern linguistic and typographic usage, and quite a few of the original twenty letters were redesigned in order to be recognizable to contemporary readers.
The resulting design was named after Tacitus, secretary to the emperor Trajan and one of the primary historians of imperial Rome.
